Glossary Of Terms

Ascot:  A necktie/wide scarf, tied so that its ends lay flat upon each other.

Athletic Cut:  A suit with larger than a six inch drop. Pants come standard with a six inch drop.

Band Bow Tie:  A bow tie, with an adjustable strap that wraps around the shirt collar and connects with a clasp.

Besom Pocket:  The particular stitching of a pocket, which has equal amounts of material on top and bottom of pocket, usually satin piped and in some instances can be a convertible flap pocket.

Bolo Tie:  A tie made of a medallion or stone with a long thin piece of material running through the back of the medallion, usually worn with a stand up collar shirt. (Western Look)

Button Cover:  Goes over the top button worn in place of the tie usually worn with a mandarin collar or a stand up collar shirt.

Cummerbund:  Belt like Sash worn around the waist usually pleated, and the pleats face up.

Cutaway:  A coat with the front cut so as to curve to the back to the tails, worn by men for formal daytime occasions; also referred to as a Morning Coat.

Dinner Jacket:  A formal Tuxedo Jacket normally white or ivory, with a notched or shawl collar

Dinner Length:  A coat of standard suit length appropriate to wear to dinner.

French Cuff:  A cuff which extends passed the wrist and is then folded back and buttoned with the aid of a cufflink.

Full Dress:  A jacket which is to the waist in the front and goes down to knees in the back; Also known as Tails.

Lay down Collar:  A traditional fold down collar; similar to men's dress shirts.

Mandarin Collar:  A tuxedo or formal shirt with banded collar.

Notch Lapel:  A lapel style which has a V shaped indentation at the collar

Peak Lapel:  V-shaped lapel points up and out just below the collar line.

Shawl:  On a coat, there is no change from the collar to the lapel; it is a rounding continuation of the collar.

Stroller:  Matching short coat to the cutaway.

Studs:  A small ornamental button mounted on a short post for insertion through an eyelet, as on a dress shirt.

Tuxedo:  Men's formalwear, commonly suit length coat single or double breasted with satin lapels.

Waist Coat:  Commonly known also as the Spencer or Eton; Similar to a full dress without the tails.

Windsor Knot Tie:  A necktie tied to look like a man's regular necktie.

Wing Collar:  A stand-up collar having the front edges or corners folded down
